No. General Membership in VMA is free and open to all students nationwide. We avoid membership fees so that no student is ever prevented from participating in community outreach.

Students everywhere may complete the Junior Program and the Leadership Initiative entirely through their own communities. They perform local outreach concerts, which are verified online through VMA Concert Completion Reports submitted by their private teachers.

Teachers submit a short VMA Concert Completion Report confirming that the outreach concert took place and that the student is enrolled in private lessons. You do not need to attend the performance—programs or photos are sufficient—and you may verify multiple students at once if several performed in the same concert. This quick process ensures outreach is verified fairly and in alignment with VMA’s mission of accessible, free, and nondiscriminatory community service.

In most cases, no. Students may perform outreach concerts nationwide with no required fundraising, unless they choose to:

• Pursue Leadership Initiative awards (Bronze, Silver, Gold), or

• Run for student government positions

There are two specific situations where fundraising thresholds apply:

a. Student Government Eligibility
Students running for club, state, or national leadership positions must meet the annual fundraising minimums.

b. VMA-Staffed Boston Concerts
Only the two staffed concerts held in the Boston area (Summer & Winter) require a concert-specific fundraising minimum to support program printing, venue coordination, and materials.

Yes. Students may fundraise throughout the year and complete outreach concerts in their communities to earn VMA National Service Awards, regardless of their location.
