From a Hospital Concert to Peabody

A performance at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2015 inspired the creation of a student outreach ensemble at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

How It Began

In 2015, Volunteer Musicians for the Arts presented a performance at Massachusetts General Hospital for patients and families. Among those listening was a faculty member from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University who was undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital.

Hearing the musicians perform during such a difficult time was deeply meaningful. The experience highlighted the extraordinary impact that live music can have in moments of vulnerability and healing.

Inspired by that performance, she later worked with students at the Peabody Institute to create a new outreach ensemble in Baltimore — the Peabody String Sinfonia.

I was a cancer patient undergoing a clinical trial treatment at Mass General in Boston. One day, after a particularly difficult treatment, I heard music coming from somewhere in the hospital. I followed the sound and came upon your wonderful concert in the lobby.

It was such a meaningful moment for me as a musician to hear music from a patient's perspective that it inspired me to start this project at my school a year later.

THANK YOU for the most transformative gift your concert gave to me!

Watch the Story

The Peabody String Sinfonia continues to bring live music to communities in Baltimore, carrying forward the spirit of service that inspired its founding.

The Ripple Effect of One Performance

What began as a single outreach performance at Massachusetts General Hospital grew into a student-led ensemble that continues to share music with communities in Baltimore today.

At Volunteer Musicians for the Arts, we believe that when musicians experience the power of sharing music in moments of need, they carry that spirit of service wherever they go.

Stories like the Peabody String Sinfonia remind us that even one performance can inspire a lasting legacy of music and compassion.
